Is the doTERRA MLM scheme worth all the hype?
Is it just me or is prospecting in network marketing awkward and embarrassing? Even after 20 years in the industry I still hear during my MLM presentation, "Is this a pyramid scheme?"
Fortunately, technology has allowed me to move much of my business online, which is a massive relief and a vastly more passive way of running a network marketing business. Even doTERRA since and even before the pandemic saw the importance and the reasoning for wellness advocate to move more of their business activities online.
Nevertheless, the world of MLM still has its critics even with companies such as doTERRA who from the very start have tried to be honest and transparent in the way the run their organization.
But, you can not please everyone.
If someone has it in their mind that MLM is bad or illegal it is very difficult to change their minds. However, for those of you who are sitting on the fence and are open to the idea of running a network marketing business. I will try and explain with the help of the doTERRA business opportunity what it means to run a MLM business from home.

There are not many network marketing companies that put as much back into society as doTERRA. The leadership does not only believe that it is good for their image, but also it is the right thing to do and the responsibility of all major companies to offer proper wages and conditions to everyone connect to their products.
Is doTERRA a pyramid scheme?
The elephant in the room is the question of legitimacy of the doTERRA business model. This is generally a lack of education of what network marketing is and what it is not.
So, to make it clear doTERRA is NOT a pyramid scheme.
It is a legitimate business opportunity available to anyone regardless of gender, race, education or religion beliefs. If you have the motivation and the desire you can become a doTERRA wellness advocate today.
So, what is the difference between a pyramid scheme and network marketing?
Network Marketing / MLM: Network marketing is a very legal business model where individuals sell products to the public. This is often call direct sales or word of month advertising. Since the introduction of new technologies such as the internet, much of the selling has moved online. The network marketer or rep gets paid a commission for selling the products. If they bring other reps into their sales team they will also receive commissions from their sales. This is where we see the use of the word "network" in network marketing. Pyramid scheme: On the other hand, pyramid schemes are highly illegal. A good way to tell if you are being offered a pyramid scheme pretending to be a MLM business is if there is NO real product or service to sell. Also, the scheme will offer a massive return on the money the you are going to invest. Often the joining fee will be low, but once you are in you are encouraged to invest large amounts of money to gain some kind of premier level. The key to avoiding pyramid schemes is to research, research and research again until you are confident you are joining a legitimate business opportunity. Another way is speak to one of their reps over the phone or work with a company with a long history.
How important is a doTERRA leader for someone serious about making money from home?
Almost everyday I receive an email asking if I can find a doTERRA rep in their city, town or village. It seems reasonable to ask such a question but when someone is serious about becoming a doTERRA wellness advocate they are disappointed with the quality of the local rep.
The truth is that the majority of the doTERRA membership are customers, wholesale customers or very low key wellness advocates (reps). This makes it very difficult for those interested in making money or education themselves in the products and business to find someone motivated enough to help and support them.

The three commitment level in the doTERRA membership can be defined by a user, a sharer and a builders or leaders.
Users
The user is self explanatory. It is someone, normally a retail customer or a wholesale customer that uses doTERRA products. They have NO interest in running a business or sharing the products.
Sharers
The sharer is a wellness advocate (doTERRA rep) but sometimes a wholesale customer who enjoys selling and sharing doTERRA oils with family and friend. Beyond that they have NO interest in building a business or making more than pin money.
Builders or Leaders
If you are serious about building a business with doTERRA, you need to be joining a builder or leader. Many years ago I stopped joining friends and family regarding their next get rich quick scheme or even legitimate business opportunity. It is not worth the hassle and stress of something going wrong or words spoken when a professional attitude should be the manner of business.
Nevertheless, the builder or leader in doTERRA is someone who knows what you do not. They have experience and they know who to speak to and where to go to get important information. They have joined doTERRA for the same reason you have and that is to make money and run doTERRA are a serous business. Joining a leader gives the new and inexperienced rep the opportunity to leap forward rather than making the same mistakes everybody else has made before they understood. Simply, joining a leader puts you in a position of power within an elite group of people who will be happy to build your business with you.
Who should you join?
Finally, if you want to join a family member or a friend it is of course up to you. My suggestion is to ask yourself, why you are joining doTERRA?
- Are you joining to buy some products at the wholesale price? Then become a wholesale customer and join a friend or family member if you want.
- Do you want to share some products, but really want to keep it low key? OK, become a wellness advocate and again join a friend or family member.
- Do you need or want to make money from doTERRA? Then, become a wellness advocate and join a leader.
